Shooting for PNTHN

If you haven’t heard about the newest group coming out of San Marcos, Texas, PNTHN, then start now. The shows are very diy so it can get really tricky especially with the very little light I work with. I’ve shot anywhere from the back of an art studio, someone’s backyard, even a living room. So here are some tips for shooting PNTHN.

Use flash

From the moment they started to perform I was blown away. The energy they bring to the stage is insane. With that being said, they move a lot. From the constant mosh pits to climbing on trees, there is a lot of movement.

Typically I would suggest using a flash. I typically keep my settings anywhere from 100-160 shutter speed; 1000-2400 ISO. Using flash you might not need to go that far with the ISO, but to each there own. Because I have to use the flash frequently, most of the shots I take are from a distance. I will switch it up with some up close shots.

Go into the crowd

Now there are many times I would object to going into a mosh pit with a $2,000 plus camera but their shows are an exception. Every show without a doubt they perform like it’s their last. Some of my best shots from their shows are when I’m in or very near the crowd. Although they are pretty much the main focus sometimes going into the crowd can lead to some interesting shots.
