I came into this knowing absolutely nothing, and to be fair I’m really that far into my career. It is just starting, so it was very discouraging feeling like no one respected the work that I did. Something I spent hours of my time learning, trying to master this craft. It felt like all that time was for nothing. When I started, I always sent cold emails to managers. A lot of the times I would get nothing back.
This industry is ruthless. Sometimes it feels like everyone is only it for their selves, always expecting or want you to do something for them. It’s taking me a long time to understand that what I do has some kind of value. Whatever that may be, I am worth something. Over the last few months, I come to appreciate the people that want to work with me, that do respect my work.
It’s important to understand that there are a lot of people who will take advantage of you. But there are also people who truly want to work with you. As cliché as it may be, surround yourself with good people. It’s taken some time, and a lot of it hasn’t been fun. I constantly talked down on my work because it wasn’t where I wanted it to be. I think one of the biggest challenges is getting people to understand that you can’t always do free work. I’ve worked for artists big and small, so I know what I’m doing.
